Char Dham Yatra — a complete first-timer's guide

Preparation, route, helicopter options and what to expect.

The Char Dham Yatra is one of Hinduism's most revered journeys. Done well, it's transformative. Here's how to prepare.

Get your medical check done early. The temples sit at 3,000-3,500m. Carry a list of your medications.

The right window is May-June or September-October. The monsoon brings landslides; by mid-October the temples begin to close.

Decide on Kedarnath helicopter. The Kedarnath trek is 16 km one way at altitude. Helicopter from Phata/Sersi cuts it dramatically.
